Correction in the previous post. My room window overlook Tokyo Bay instead of some construction site. hehehe.
(The morning view of Tokyo Bay, from the room window)
Had a really good rest last night and woke up at 7.30 am Tokyo time for breakfast with that Aussie guy from the airline.
The temperature declined to 7 degrees celcius last night. It is insanely cold, here in Tokyo.
(View of Tokyo Tower from the interview room)
We had a short briefing and went through some practise on the recruitment and interview due noon.
Normally we don’t do this, but because this time there’ll be a crew from the Channel 9 Australia Television, here in Tokyo to film a documentary show on our recruitment, due to air some time early next year.
If you’re lucky, you might even spot me in the show. *fingers cross*
(1st batch shortlisted candidates paying attention to the airline presentation)
The only freaky thing now is my one little acne might be obvious, since we don’t put on makeups and mostly we get close-up shots from the camera.
(The cameraman taking shots of the candidates during the one of the activities, to test their overall teamwork skills)
Anyhow, the pressure working in front of the camera is too great for one to handle.
I might add in that it’s very much competitive for the Japanese to be part of the cabin crew, for any airlines in the world.
Perhaps I will throw-in some tips on how candidates are assessed and selected, in the near future.
Why not now you might wonder. Coz I’m enjoying my 500ml Asahi beer. That’s why. And I tend not to squeeze my brain juice right now.
(270 Yen Asahi beer, from AM PM convenient store)
Back to the recruitment activities.
They were assigned to perform 5 different tasks, individually and as a group.
(The candidates performing the final task, some written test)
English testing was part of it, but mainly to assess their personal characteristics, communication styles and their memory abilities.
The personal characteristics that we assess are mainly:
- Warm
- Confident
- Polite
- Develop Rapport
- Empathetic
- etc.
- etc.
- etc.
- etc.
- etc.
Overall, they did pretty well in the assessment.
It became extremely tough for us to choose. And finally we decided to fail half of them.
MD-san announced the results with his fluent japanese in front of the camera. But the tv crew adviced him to speak in English instead. So he gave up the whole announcement thing, and passed the ‘dirty job‘ to me.
Ehhhh !! I’m not good at this, especially in front of the camera.
At that moment I expect that they would throw probably some rotten eggs hidden in their bag, towards me, once I announce the results.
To my surprise, they took it calmly. But of course there were a few that questioned the results.
To worsen the situation, the tv crew took shots of their sad faces, and even interviewed them.
Creepy…

After the whole interview session ended, I went cruising the streets by myself. Hopefully to discover something unexpected, e.g. kawaii girls.
And I asked the hotel receptionist for directions.
“Where is the shopping district around this area”
I assumed she understood my half Japanese half English language.
She pointed a location on the district map and said “Here“.
OK…
I walked and walked and walked, and finally reached the doorstep of that location she pointed out.
Departmental store ?
I looked at the big sign again…
And it says, AM PM CONVENIENT STORE !!
*speechless*
I am….extremely grateful that you have been so helpful, directing me to a convenient store instead of a departmental store.
Thank you very much.
(Next to Daimon station, near the hotel, where the Tokyo Tower can be easily identified from far)
Since I ended up at the convenient store, I thought I might as well walk to Tokyo Tower.
Only 20 minutes from the hotel, the Nihon-jin-walk, not the Malaysian-walk.
And one thing I noticed in the end, there aren’t any departmental stores around this Minato-ku district.
All that walk for nothing ?
